Colombia Runs on Different Apps Than You're Used To

Colombia has its own app ecosystem. WhatsApp is how everyone communicates — not SMS, not email, not iMessage. Voice notes are preferred over typing. Expect 30-second audio clips in every group chat.

Rappi is the super-app that replaced a dozen others: groceries, pharmacy, restaurant delivery, alcohol, cleaning products, pet supplies — all in 30 minutes across 40 cities.

The banking system has its own apps. Nequi and DaviPlata handle peer transfers and bill payments without a traditional bank account. Wise replaces Western Union for international transfers.

The Complete Stack

📱 COMMUNICATION

WhatsApp is Colombia's operating system for human connection. Use voice notes — Colombians prefer them over text. Set up a Colombian number or eSIM (Holafly: unlimited data 5-90 days from $19; Airalo: 1-5GB for $8-32). For keeping your US/UK number: Google Voice (note: blocks some Colombian numbers), Skype Number ($3/month) works reliably. Add your building portero, landlord, and key contacts to WhatsApp on day one.

eSIM Service:

🚕 TRANSPORT

InDriver — ride-hailing with demand-based pricing. You name the price. Safer than street taxis because rides are tracked. Cabify — premium ride-sharing, cleaner cars, fixed rates. Uber operates in a legal grey zone in Colombia but widely used. In Bogotá: download TransMiApp + load a Tu Llave card (5,000 pesos) for the SITP/Transmilenio bus network. In Medellín: the Metro app + Cívica card gives QR-code transit access without cash.

🛵 FOOD & DELIVERY

Rappi is non-negotiable. 40 cities, 30,000 partner businesses, 30-minute delivery for groceries, restaurant food, pharmacy, alcohol, cleaning supplies. Rappi Pro costs 19,900 COP/month (~$5) — pays for itself in 4 deliveries. Delivery fee: 5,000-8,000 COP per order. iFood and Domicilios.com exist but Rappi dominates. Set up your first Rappi order from the airport taxi — your groceries arrive before you unpack.

💸 BANKING & MONEY

Nequi (Bancolombia's digital wallet) — requires a cédula de extranjería and Colombian phone. Holds pesos, free peer transfers, widely accepted. DaviPlata — transfers to any Colombian bank account, free QR payments; first-time international recipients must visit a branch. Wise is essential for receiving foreign income — far superior to Western Union (which charges 8-12% fees). ATM cost: 6,500-8,500 COP per withdrawal. Tip: BBVA and Colpatria ATMs charge no extra fees.

Recommended Services:

🏠 HOUSING

Finca Raíz — 350,000+ properties, Colombia's dominant real estate app, WhatsApp contact built-in. Metrocuadrado for higher-end listings. Airbnb for your first 30-60 days. For long-term rentals: Facebook groups by city are the best source for un-listed apartments with local landlords. Search: '[City] Apartments Expats' and '[City] Arriendos'.

🗣️ LANGUAGE

Tandem language exchange has 34,748+ Colombian members — use it for real conversation practice, not just formal lessons. Duolingo teaches textbook Spanish; not ideal for Colombian slang or paisa/rolo/costeño accents. Google Translate camera mode (download offline pack) — aim it at any document, contract, or menu. Pimsleur is superior for spoken Colombian Spanish. The embarrassment barrier breaks around 200 hours / month 5-6.

🏥 HEALTHCARE & EMERGENCIES

Doctoralia — 60,000+ Colombian specialists, online booking. For English-speaking doctors: DoctorsForExpats.com offers video consultations ($50-80). Emergency: 123 (unified emergency). Crime reporting: 165 (URI rapid response). In Bogotá, Fundación Santa Fe is JCI-accredited and has English-speaking staff. In Medellín: Clínica Las Américas or Pablo Tobón Uribe. Download your health insurance policy PDF to your phone before you need it.
