Can you open a Colombian account as a foreigner?
It depends on the institution, product and your documents. Ask the bank for its current foreign-customer requirements before making a visit. A passport, a visa and a cédula de extranjería are different documents; acceptance of one does not imply acceptance by every bank or payment app.
Nequi's published account-opening requirements include specified Colombian identity documents, including a cédula de extranjería. Do not assume a tourist passport alone qualifies. Confirm eligibility and the account's limits directly with the provider.
Arrange a backup before you travel
Check that your existing cards work abroad, how you will receive security codes and what your bank charges for purchases and withdrawals. Keep a second payment method separately. Record how to contact the bank without relying on the same phone you might lose.
Ask prospective landlords and service providers which payment methods they accept. A transfer service that works for a friend may not support your residence country, currency or intended payment type.
Put the decision in context
The setting affects access, climate, transport and the questions you need to ask a provider.

Compare the amount received, not a “zero fee” label
For each quote, record the amount you send, the exchange rate, all stated fees, the amount arriving in pesos and the expected delivery time. Compare quotes at approximately the same time. A favorable-looking fee can be offset by the rate or an intermediary charge.
For a first transfer, consider a small test after independently verifying the recipient details. Larger property or business transfers need proper source-of-funds records and advice about any reporting or registration obligations.
Keep your records usable
- Save account-opening and fee documents, not just screenshots of an advertisement.
- Keep receipts that show sender, recipient, currency, rate and purpose.
- Review withdrawal limits and any local ATM fee before confirming a transaction.
- Never share one-time passwords or approve a login because someone claims to be bank support.
