Which Colombian visa do you need?
Start with what you will actually do in Colombia: visit, work for a foreign company, take a Colombian job, study, join family or live on a pension. There is no single “expat visa.” Your nationality, activity and evidence determine the route; buying a flight or renting an apartment does not establish eligibility.
Cancillería groups visas into visitor (V), migrant (M) and resident (R) categories. Each has its own permissions and conditions. Read the official category description before buying translations, insurance or an agent's package.
Three decisions to make first
- Separate a scouting visit from a relocation. Visa-free entry, where available, is not a promise of a particular admission period or permission to do any kind of work.
- Identify where your work and income come from. The digital-nomad route is not a general permit to take local employment.
- Check each family member. A principal applicant's eligibility does not automatically settle a partner's or child's documentation or permission to work.
Paperwork happens in a real place
Keep the documents precise, then make room for the neighborhoods and routines your move would actually involve.
Build a document register
For each requirement, record the issuing authority, issue date, expiry or maximum document age, apostille or legalization requirement, translation requirement and upload limit. Names should agree across your passport and supporting records. Resolve discrepancies before applying.
Keep originals and readable scans. Do not send unredacted bank statements or passport copies to an unverified intermediary. Use the application link reached from Cancillería's own website, and confirm official fees at the time of payment.
After a decision
Read the issued visa, not just the approval email. Confirm the category, validity, permitted activity, dependants and conditions on absences. Check with Migración Colombia whether visa registration and a cédula de extranjería apply, and record the applicable deadline.
An application, an extension request and an approved status are different things. Do not assume a pending application authorizes an overstay. Ask the authority or a qualified immigration lawyer about your circumstances before your current permission expires.
