Who is the digital nomad visa for?
Cancillería's V digital-nomad category covers qualifying remote work for foreign businesses and certain digital ventures. It is not permission to take paid work from a person or business domiciled in Colombia. Nationality eligibility also matters; check the official category before assuming you can apply.
The published requirements include income evidence equal to at least three current legal monthly minimum wages over the previous three months, suitable health insurance, and evidence of the foreign work or venture. The stated validity is up to two years, not a guaranteed two-year award or indefinite renewal.
Put the work arrangement in writing
Ask your employer or clients to document the relationship and remuneration in the form the authority requires. If you own a foreign business, check which ownership and remote-work evidence is required. A laptop, a freelance profile or a large savings balance does not replace the requested documents.
Your employer may have separate rules about international work, client data, insurance and payroll. Get written permission before making commitments in Colombia. Immigration approval does not resolve those obligations.
Paperwork happens in a real place
Keep the documents precise, then make room for the neighborhoods and routines your move would actually involve.

Prepare an application, not a folder of guesses
- Check your passport's nationality and validity against the current rules.
- Collect the requested income records and work evidence; verify that names and amounts are consistent.
- Obtain a policy certificate covering the territory, dates and risks required by the category.
- Review the application instructions, fees and any registration obligations through official channels.
Keep tax and immigration separate
Remote work paid abroad is not automatically tax-free. Your travel days, residence position, income and work arrangement need their own assessment. Track entries and exits from the first visit and discuss your situation with a cross-border tax professional.
For a trial stay, verify your particular admission conditions with Migración Colombia. Do not treat another traveller's admission stamp, visa length or renewal experience as a rule for your own case.
